Better than my wildest expectations. July 23, 2010 Lee in Houston, TX 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having 2 HDTV's but cancelling cable-TV due to the high monthly costs, I knew I would have to rely on an indoor antenna from then on. I spent 20+ hours online reading reviews, comparing products and prices along with many detailed technical reviews of antennas. The TV Antenna GeoSelector at this free website, [...], allowed me to see exactly which broadcasting stations were transmitting along with how far they were from my apartment.
Having purchased digital rabbit ears during the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, I connected and scanned for available channels. I was unhappy with the results and realized I'd have to pursue something better. Until reading the technical reviewing at the listed website, I didn't realize being too close to the broadcasting towers and using the plugged-in amplifier could actually cause my TV's channel-scanning to drop stations. I unplugged the rabbit ears and was quite happy to see an enormous increase of available channels after rescanning without amplification. For some reason, my primary HDTV couldn't receive some of the channels without having to adjust the rabbit ears each time. Not wanting to do this when switching channels, I decided to purchase this omni-directional RCA antenna for the HDTV in the living room and put the rabbit ears on the TV in the bedroom.
What a great decision this turned out to be, with the bedroom TV not needing any adjusting when switching channels and my new modern flat-profile antenna on the larger HDTV here in the living room. I laid this pagesize antenna next to the HDTV on it's table, connected the COAX without plugging in the amplifier, clicked my TV's channel scanning process and couldn't believe my eyes. I now was receiving perfect HD/Digital signals on 52 of the 68 possible channel numbers. Of course this included a mix of Hispanic, Asian, Religious, Shopping Club and Major Networks but some were coming from over 60 miles away and were showing with no pixelation at all. This included some channels I'd never heard of from all my years using cable-TV and the very best thing about it...it is all free :)
After defining all my "favorite" channels on my remote I can happily flip through 31 great choices when wanting some TV time, now. Let me add that I didn't even purchase a brand new RCA antenna but chose to save even more on a "used" one that included everything in the box that a new one had. Not needing amplification to receive signals, I cannot offer information as to how successful this antenna is when plugged in. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, as I now have an additional $70 to spend each month instead of sending it to a cable-TV provider.
Sleek and effective. July 21, 2010 Pillager Thought that I would sacrifice signal for the low profile look. On the contrary, I pulled in 29 Channels on the first try. My larger, previous amplified Radio Shack antenna was an eye sore and did not pull quite this many channels in and signal was a bit weaker here and there. Will buy another for the bonus room soon enough.
Good, but needs more... July 12, 2010 mikensue This antenna works pretty good for an indoor one. However the amplifier leaves something to be desired. No where in the instructions or on the box does it say how many dB's it amplifies the signal by. Emailed RCA with that question and no response. My guess it's only in the 6-10 dB range.
Here's what you need to do...buy a GE 22dB Video Amplifier for UHF/VHF signal off Ebay and a 3 ft video coax cable from Home Depot and hook it up to the this antenna. Now your talking about some decent signal strength and channel reception in HD. Don't forget to program your TV with a new channel scan after your hook it up or this will all go for not. Hope this helps.
Pleasantly surprised July 8, 2010 Shawn I live in Los Angeles, surrounded by hills, and I was never able to get decent TV reception in the old (pre-digital) days with a rooftop antenna. I didn't have much hope that I would get any reception from this indoor antenna, but I just had to give it a try. Boy, was I surprised! I get signals in the 80+ range for about 25 channels, in the 70+ range for another 25 channels, and in the 60+ range (still pretty clear) for another 25 channels; 75 viewable channels in all, including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, KCAL, KCOP, KTLA, etc, all in HD.
I did have to spend some time trying different locations. I finally picked a point high on the wall facing in the general direction of Mt. Wilson. Using the adjacent wall (perpendicular) did not produce as-good results.
I also tried the Antennas Direct DB4 Multi-Directional HDTV Antenna Antennas Direct DB4 Multi-Directional HDTV Antennaand the Terk HDTVa Amplified antennaTerk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception. Neither worked nearly as well as this one.
Doesn't Work July 2, 2010 The Seeker 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I live in an area of the city that does not get good TV air reception. I tried this item and could only get 3 channels! I even walked around the room holding the antenna with no luck. I get better reception with my old rabbit ears than this!
