Poor build quality August 26, 2010 Daniel J Sullivan (Chicago, IL USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this Harmony remote for nearly two years. It is very expensive and the build quality is HORRIBLE.
First, setup is very complicated, but ok. However, in spite of the complexity, there were a few things I couldn't do, especially with my setup which includes a Windows Media Center PC attached to the TV.
The first problem I had was that when adjusting the volume on my Denon Receiver, it would not register, then go up really, really fast. So, you'd press and it wouldn't take, then all of a sudden you nearly blow your speakers. Over time, the volume basically stopped working. I don't know if it was a software issue (you can adjust the IR output, but it never worked right) or the build quality because eventually the button just wouldn't work at all.
My daughter pushed it off the coffee table and it fell about 2.5 feet and landed on carpet. The accelerometer broke from the fall and the auto backlighting stopped working (about 1 month after buying it).
Now, probably 7 different buttons do not work. The ones that do work are inconsistent. It is a very poor product at this price. They need to find a new manufacturer and use better materials. If it worked as advertised it would be a good product.
I had no problems with the battery life at all. I just gave up on this remote and got my old remotes out of the bottom of the drawer. After two years of being beneath a pile of toys they work fine. No way this remote would work at all if the situation was reversed.
Be weary of display going out August 19, 2010 cguerra 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had I known this product (Harmony 890) has a shelf life of about two years, I wouldn't have dropped $300 on a remote control.
I naively assumed that since I was paying top dollar for an item such as a remote it would last longer than just a couple of years. Out of the blue, one day, the lcd display stopped showing anything but the blue background, look around the net and you will see that this is a common problem, so please be weary that you may have to memorize all the buttons assignments after it goes out or get ready to buy another.
I am very disappointed in the quality of a supposed high end remote.
Grandma can use it July 27, 2010 ACMIA So this remote is amazing. The software to setup is simple, and walks you through the process. Once it is setup you will wonder how you got along without it. It is awesome how you can keep all your components tucked away and still control them.
My grandmother, who is 74, is able to navigate the remote and thinks it is fascinating compared to my fathers 4 remote business.
The BEST and the WORST July 23, 2010 buckeye09 (Cleveland, OH) It is not surprising to me to see so many glowing reviews and terrible reviews on this product. I am a gadget guy, my wife is not. When I first got the remote setup my wife called it the best purchase I had ever made. That was about a year ago, and several times since then it has almost gone flying through a wall.
First of all, it is very easy to setup. It downloads updated software from the web. You enter in model numbers of your components and it knows the remote commands for those components. Then you setup "Activities" like Watch TV, Watch a DVD, Listen to Music, etc. What this remote does better than any I had ever used before is remembering the status of all of the applicable components. So If you are watching TV and want to watch a DVD, it will leave the TV on, turn the cable box off, turn the DVD player on, and switch the TV input form cable to DVD. And the remote can be programmed to know what devices to control once you are in an activity. So if you setup "Watch a DVD" to run through surround sound, the remote knows that if you press the volume buttons it is controlling your receiver, if you hit pause it is controlling the DVD player. One button turns everything off when you are done.
The other "magical" thing about this remote is radio frequency. You can control everything through walls, in cabinets, etc without having a line of sight. You can get an adapter to control the blu-ray player of a PS3.
The biggest negative I had ended up not being the remote's fault, although it should be better documented by Logitech. My remote suddenly stopped working unless it was pointed directly at the RF receiver and was relatively close to the receiver. After a lot of internet research, I found that my next door neighbor's baby monitor was interfering with the remote. They changed the channel on the monitor and the remote works near perfect ever since. I say near perfect because it is still a bit glitchy. Sometimes when I hit "Watch a DVD" it turns everything on and puts them in the correct state, but the remote doesn't stay on the PS3 control, it goes back to the activity screen. So now I have to hit the "Devices" button, hit PS3 and then control the PS3. If I want to change the volume, I have to hit "Devices" again, hit receiver, and then control volume. The magic is lost. I was also having some volume control issues. I would tap the volume up or down and it would go nuts turning the volume way up or down as if I was holding the button down. That was intermittent and I haven't noticed it since the baby monitor fix, so it may have been related to that. Before realizing the baby monitor issue I had done some internet research and found people who were taking the remotes apart to fix volume control issues, so it may be a bigger issue.
One other issue I have is that the infrared adapters used to control the individual components are very thin. They tend to get broken very often in my environment.
Overall I am mostly happy with the remote. It is mostly magical now, but I worry about what is going to go wrong next. I can't imagine living without the magical functionality if it ever totally dies.
Finally a Universal that Works July 13, 2010 Melvin Hopkins (Grove City, OH, US) This Remote works wonderfully! I would not purchase a remote that did not do both IR and RF.
