2 out of 5 stars Denon Universal Blu-ray Disc Player Not so Universal   June 20, 2010

I wouldn't recommend this product. These are the reasons:
1) Expensive.
2) Some Blu-ray discs won't play on it. They play fine on my OPPO player.
3) Some DVD Audio discs won't play on it. They play fine on my OPPO player.
4) Slow loading.

This Player not only demonstrates the Ultimate Picture Quality of Blu-Ray, but also has a RICH FULL NATURAL SOUND when playing any Medici Arts/Euro Arts, Opus Arte, Decca or EMI Blu-Ray/DVD recorded in the last 4 years.

I only play Live Concerts of Classical Music/Ballets, on Blu-Ray/DVD, and I know from many experiences what a live orchestra sounds like in a Concert Hall. In addition, my two channel(!) state-of-the-art Audio System is not just REVEALING, it is UNFORGIVING, so I had to find the best sounding Player out there, or suffer the consequences. To quote Winston Churchill: "I am easily satisfied with the very best", and I cannot find anything to complain about with this MADE IN JAPAN DENON Player. (Except the fact that I takes a bit too long to think about whatever command it has just received from the Remote Control)

The only thing which will top this Player is when Software and Hardware Manufacturers start to use the full potential of the Blu-Ray Audio Spec: 192kHz Sampling with a 32 Bit Word Length. Currently, most of them are apparently using 192kHz and 24 Bit, but with admirable results.

In my humble but educated opinion, we are entering a New Golden Age of Music & Video Recording and Reproduction.
So, bring on Cinema 2K, or skip directly to Cinema 4K, Music Lovers like myself are ready and waiting!

(Living in Canada, I couldn't buy this Player from Amazon.com, but I have bought over 60 DVDs and Blu-Rays from Amazon.com over the last 2 years - I love the Price, Selection, Reviews, Shipping Speed and Reliability - keep up the good work!)

2010/04/13 UPDATE: After 3 days of assessing my new 1 Metre Monster MC 1000HD HDMI Cable (from Amazon.com), I am completely BLOWN AWAY by the tiny details and gradations of Deep Colour I am experiencing with familiar BDs (Blu-Ray Discs)! There must be ten times as many shades of Blue! I can sit 3 feet from the 46" Sony Bravia Screen, and apart from some blurring on fast action, I can achieve Screen Dominance and Detail similar to a National Geographic IMAX THEATRE! This proves I should go for the new Sony Bravia NX 800 60" TV with 240Hz Refresh rate which I have been lusting for! More of this anon...

2010/06/17 UPDATE: THE 60" SONY BRAVIA NX800 IS EVERYTHING YOU COULD WISH FOR!!!! No need to worry about the whinings of people who hate SONY (A Hated Authority Figure Icon for Victim Mentalities?) and who complain about things they THOUGHT they saw during a Big Box Store Demonstration. The only thing they got right is that there IS the OCCASIONAL warming-up or cooling-down "clunk". However, the non-resonant space-age plastic rear cover is a dream come true for me, as I play my Blu-Rays LOUD, and I don't want to hear the back of the TV resonating with the music. When you see the silk wrap which Romeo (Carlos Acosta) wears in the new Royal Ballet Covent Garden Blu-Ray fluttering in the wind as he runs toward Juliet in the Balcony Scene, you are seeing it accurately for the first time due to 1080P and 240hZ. You don't have to be a Technician to see the difference! I rest my case....

2010/07/05 UPDATE: Sound Hounds, my local Denon Dealer, were kind enough to plug my DBP-4010UDCI into the Denon Website for a Firmware Update, which took a full hour. Unbelievably, the blacks are blacker, the Deep Colour even richer, and more tiny details are apparent. Where will this end?

5 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it to videophiles with an eye for quality   February 12, 2010

This is my first blu ray player so I spent some time investigating this unit. First off, it does play all the media it claims to play. The feature I like is the extreme clarity it provides to my older std def DVDs. The clarity and smooth play for these (and the blu rays) is amazing, and the sound quality from them (some older concert DVDs) is equally outstanding. Granted, everything I am running is a digital siginal. I use this in conjunction with a DENON AVR 4306. The TV is a 60" JVC Dila rear proj. (was supposed to be 1080p which was later settled in a lawsuit - but thats another story). The hookup is HDMI to tv with optical out and denon link to the receiver. Setup was very simple - 4 cables (and i may have gotten away with 3, I just was not familiar with the denon link). HMDI, optical out, link, and a power cord. Thats it. It is a heavy unit due to the electronics on board, so its not for questionable setups. I have it in an oak entertainment center. The price is quite high, so I'd say its only for advanced setups if you have the equipment for it. Its also forward usable as it does update firmware via the net connection. If you are looking for a very high quality blu ray+ DVD unit, with exceptional sound and picture output, and can stand the very high cost, this unit is worth the investment. Based on other Denon equip I have had, you will have this for a LONG time. Enjoy!
