2 out of 5 stars JUST DON'T DO IT   July 24, 2010
Linda L. Adair (Panama City, Fl USA)
I made the mistake of buying this, disregarding the reviews. I thought that because I absolutely love my Visio LCD television, that this would be the perfect match. No. I loathe this player. Beautiful picture, very easy to set up, and it is cheap! Therein lies the problem. It is very cheap. As the other reviews have noted, the remote has to be directly in line with the player - not a degree off. My player has a door problem. From day one, I have to get up and push the drawer closed. It will not close on its own. That's just the beginning.

I started loading "The Bounty Hunter" at about 9:05 pm. It is now 10:00 and I still cannot watch the movie because it's a Blu-Ray disc. It starts to load, then opens the drawer. I get up to close the drawer and start again. It goes through the "loading disc" phase for a few minutes, then it opens the drawer again. I get up close the drawer, it stalls. I try the remote to get it to play, ffwd, stop - anything. Have to get up again, turn the power off, turn it back on, the boot up begins, it opens the drawer, I shut the drawer. Finally! It's going to play. I don't want to watch the previews so I hit the disc menu button, nothing, no response. I hit the chapter button until the previews are history. The main menu comes up and I select play without the genius option. It starts to play then it freezes. Again the buttons on the remote are unresponsive. I take the disc out and run laser cleaning disc through the player. (I have to do this every three or four plays) Put the disc back in and start over again. Got all the way to Chapter two and it stopped playing again. I give up on the Blu-Ray and put in a DVD - no problem, it's playing just fine.

If you want to play Blu-Ray discs, get a different player or a Play Station 3. If your life is simply otherwise boring, or you need the physical exercise or just need to practice patience - buy this player. I'm looking for a better player myself. Watching a Blu-Ray movie on a Blu-Ray player should not be this frustrating. The only good thing about this player is the picture quality on all of my DVDs is so much better with the HDMI cable (which you have to buy separately) and this player's up-scaling ability.

1 out of 5 stars RIP - died after 6 months   July 11, 2010
Sirius Cybernetics (New Jersey)
Bought this player January of this year. Last night (July 10) while playing a DVD the picture just froze. I've had situations before where playing would hesitate and them jerkily resume after a few seconds, but this time nothing after minutes. I tried cleaning the disc (which visibly looked clean) with window cleaner, but the reinserted disc then failed to load and ejected automatically after a minute. Known good and recently played DVDs and Blue Rays subsequently then failed similarly. I don't buy the possibility that all my discs went suddenly bad, dirty and/or incompatible. After six months service the played just dropped dead. Nothing lasts forever, but I expect better reliability than this.

3 out of 5 stars Cheap, but that's it   May 28, 2010
T. Whiting (Iowa)
I picked this Blu-ray player up when my PS3 got taken from my apartment, because it was cheap and I thought it would allow me to continue enjoying BRD movies. Sadly, the "cheap" factor of this player is pretty evident. It's cheaply made, poorly done, and the entire thing is just awful .

Where to start? Probably with the most common problem - Scratched discs:
This player has a HUGE problem when scratched discs are put in, where it won't even READ them. In areas where dust collects like mad, you can forget about keeping those discs perfectly clean, and this player, not helping one bit. I've tried cleaning the lense, I've tried every trick (including attempting to update the firmware), none work. The disc isn't badly scratched even, just slightly so, but the player refuses to look at it.

More problems? Ok, how about the pathetic network/storage setup:
This thing has got to have one of the slowest network connections that I've ever seen. It's just flat out awful! I mean, I can browse through entire web pages on the PC faster than this thing takes to do it's garbage. Slow as molasses!!

More problems? How about the elusive 'firmware updates':
These guys advertise a 'firmware update' is available to bring the loader up to v500. Following pretty simple step-by-step instructions, you can do this, IF the player wants to cooperate. Mine didn't, so what do I get? No firmware update, meaning no HOPE of EVER dealing with the issues presented by this pathetic player.

Save your money, buy something better, this is DEFINITELY not worth your time or money.

1 out of 5 stars Replaced once and still no better!   May 28, 2010
Brian Hixson (Avon, OH USA)
I recently updated the firmware on my VBR110 Blu-ray player in hopes to resolve some problems. After being on the phone with customer service support for just over an hour, they couldn't solve my problems. I just spent $75 on some new videos this week and none of them were able to be loaded/played. Hoped the update was going to work and nothing. Can't take the movies back, just exchange for same because they have been opened. This has already been the second VBR110 I have had because the last one froze up constantly and I had to unplug and plug it back in to restart and eject disc. This unit has done the same thing and funny that it only freezes on Blu-ray discs and plays DVDs fine. Regardless, I'm done with this player. Going out tomorrow in search of a new player.
