Don't count on Samsung products to be compatible without additional purchases... July 28, 2010 Alison Varrell (Massachusetts) I purchased (and subsequently returned) this product due to the fact that it required a receiver in order to hook it up to my Samsung TV. Perhaps I assumed too much that a product made by the same manufacturer would work together without a lot of fuss, but I was very disappointed and frustrated to find that what I thought would be a simple matter of attaching the cables, I would be able to hook up this combination dvd/vcr component quickly and easily. My experience with this purchase will make me think twice about buying Samsung in the future.
VCR Doesn't Work July 9, 2010 mi We purchased this combo player, because we wanted to be able to play both DVDs and our VCR tapes. The DVD player works wonderfully and the upconversion feature does a great job with our new LCD HD TV. However, we have only used the VCR player a couple times, and it stopped working. I have read in other reviews that other people have had the same problem. This is ridiculous. We would have just bought a plain DVD player if that was all we wanted. We purchased this at Costco and plan on returning it.
Broken on delivery, and fussy about region 0 disks. June 29, 2010 Alex O'donnell (Oakland, CA.) So everyone is reporting a short life span on this unit. I just received mine this afternoon, and was quite pleased with its overall look and feel. I put in my first trial disk, region 1 NTSC, and it all seemed to work well. I put in my second trial disc, region 2 PAL, no surprise, it was reject due to region. The third disc was a nasty surprise, region 0 PAL (yes a few UK disks come like that) and it was rejected, not for region but "tv system".
The third surprise was that it did play the VHS tape without the magenta band at the top of the screen, a vast improvement on the one it's replacing, but the player like the tape so much it wouldn't give it back. That's right the VHS player door does not open automatically. So there it is, lovingly unwrapped, carefully in the tower, and the mechanism is broken. Add insult to injury I didn't buy it locally so I can't just take it back, I have to pay shipping!
Oh, and I'd never heard of a Tunerless VCR, so I didn't even think to see if that was an option.
First thing from SAMSUNG I haven't loved June 15, 2010 A. J. JONES (MI, USA) The DVD V-9800 is cheaply made, thats why the price is so low. The DVD player hums and the tape player hums louder. Oh yeah, about the tape player, mine looks like it is working and then doesn't display anything. Apparently, this is a common problem, online. The DVD player works well when the preferences are set (the defaults are bogus). Overall, I wish I would have spent double the money for the better series.
The Button Controls are Small May 23, 2010 S. dow We've only had this machine a short time and all ready I hate it. It's hard to work because you can't see the buttons. The machine isn't working correctly on rewind for VHS either. I'm taking it back, not worth the money.
