4 out of 5 stars Good - could be better   May 8, 2010
C. White
I have really enjoyed this player, and it is still going strong nearly a year and a half after purchase. My only complaints are the slow start up time, a little loud on start up, and the occasional pickiness about what it will play. Some DVDs my son has made which play on other players will not play on this - and some will. Same with some commercial DVDs. It hasn't happened enough to drive me batty, and we do have other players when it does happen, but I thought it should at least be mentioned.

In short, it's a very good player but not perfect by any means.

1 out of 5 stars Failed in less than a year. Bad quality, bad warranty.   February 21, 2010

As a DVR, I had no complaints. It was pretty easy to record shows and use the basic features of the DVR, and the upconverting was fine. But this product died just two weeks shy of one year. It won't power on. Toshiba indicates a $90 + shipping replacement cost, where they send you a refurbished unit with a 30 day warranty. This isn't a warranty, its robbery. I can't recommend a product that can't last a year, with a warranty that fails to provide reasonable protection within that year.

2 out of 5 stars Great product when it worked   January 20, 2010

Good product, very poor reliability. The primary purpose for this product was to allow the viewing of HD channels without cable, satellite, or dish with a secondary purpose of recording. When it worked, it did both jobs very well. However within in 6 months of purchase it would on occasion stop transmitting the HD signal and after about 11 months it completely stopped. The Toshiba warranty is for a very short time period so that was not an option. When the product worked it was great. I rated it a 2 for reliability. A product should last at least a year.

3 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted!   January 6, 2010

I bought this recorder a little over a year ago, for Christmas, to replace a VCR with an analog tuner with a DVD recorder with digital tuner. At first, it worked perfectly. See other reviews for this recorder at its best, but suffice it to say it had a good tuner, and good recording quality.

A few months in, it picked up a "quirk". On HD channels only, it took two presses of the record button to start recording, and several presses of the pause or record button to resume recording after pausing recording. I eventually figured out that if I pressed pause once during commercials, it would only take one more press several seconds later to get it recording again. OK, this was odd, but it still worked.

A few weeks ago, the display button on the remote stopped working. Then the Stop button; though the button on the device itself worked. Eventually, Setup stopped working, so I couldn't finalize DVDs. I set up a timer recording, but the ATSC tuner stopped working and all I got was black. At this point I gave up on the recorder.

Contrary to worries in some reviews, none of the mechanical parts failed. The failures were purely electronic. Electronics that can last five years or more shouldn't be too much to ask for.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk broke right after the 3 month warranty expired   December 22, 2009

Don't buy this bad product. Poor warranty. The warranty is only 3 months long and the product is hard to use and has poor video quality.
My recorder stopped recording within 4 months of the purchase.
Next recorder I buy will need at least a 1 year warranty. I wish I had checked the warranty on this unit before I purchased it.
