philipd dvd recorder May 6, 2010 William T. Wilcox I dont have any complaints about the actual functions of recording or viewing.the only problems im having are it not keeping correct time.it went a week once but more often it will only last a couple days.and the fan runs for about 6hrs a day even though the unit is not turned on
Worked great, until it didn't. Then forget about customer support! April 25, 2010 sherwood01 (Raleigh, NC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this unit back in November 2008, and have actually been pretty happy with it since I bought it. In the last month or so, though, it's been acting like our old Panasonic unit did when it was picking up stray IR remote signals from what is apparently someone with a new similar unit on the same frequency outside the house: the clock changes times, we find it on channels that we never watch, and on one occasion, it changed channels in the middle of an hour show while I was recording it, so I lost the entire second half of the show.
When this happened with our Panasonic unit, they've got several settings that can be changed via the remote so that if you have multiple units, you can set them so that only the remote that came with the unit works with JUST that unit and doesn't interfere with the other unit. So when we started picking up stray signals with THAT unit, we changed the unit settings to a different frequency or whatever it does, and voila, no more stray signals from outside the house.
The Philips unit started doing the same thing several weeks ago. Did not find any instructions in the manual to fix it like I was able to do with the Panasonic, so sent them an email to find out if it was possible, and if so, how?
Not only did Philips support NOT answer my question in their email, they first referred me to look at the PDF of the manual (which I told them in my initial email that I'd already checked), and if nothing there could help me, they suggested I check the yellow pages for a local service company and have the unit repaired, since the unit was out of warranty.
My two subsequent emails to them to try to get them to actually ANSWER the actual question that I asked have been completely ignored, and when I tried to follow up directly from the website, their email support links were broken.
Finally had to go to an outside website to ask other technical experts who said that so far as they know, Philips has NO way to remedy picking up stray IR signals, that I might try putting something like black gaffer tape to try and block the stray signals to avoid having programs that were recording from being changed mid recording, but other than that couldn't really help me much.
This was the first Philips product I've ever bought, and will definitely be the last (maybe THAT'S why they don't bother supplying a remote control fix for people with two Philips units; once you buy one, you never actually BUY a second one.) The thing worked great until someone nearby bought one on the same frequency, and suddenly ours becomes completely unreliable, with no fix available from Philips, and zero technical support. I'd not be dissing them quite so much had they just come out and actually owned up to the fact that No, their units have no way to change settings to avoid stray IR signals. But could never get a straight answer from anyone.
So long story short, we LOVED this recorder, it was a great unit, as long as you're the only one in IR remote range that has one. If someone else on the same frequency moves in nearby, though, might as well forget about it working even remotely (no pun intended) reliably.
Not happy to have to go and buy a new recorder now, less than two years after I bought this one (the Panasonic that I bought a year or two before this one is still working great, just as an FYI.)
We received a refurbished unit that was a lemon. April 12, 2010 S. Collins (Chicagoland) We received this DVD Recorder(Refurbished) the last week of March, 2010. We couldn't get it to work at all. We have a 1 year old HDTV (a 1080p Samsung, flat screen LCD TV), bought a good HDMI cable to make setup easier and give optimum picture/sound and bought good DVD-R discs. In spite of all this, we couldn't get anything to record at all, either to disc or the hard drive. We even had a techie geek try to get it to work and he was also unsuccessful. It would not record. We just got static and noise and error messages. We think this unit was still a lemon (after reburbishing and testing).
Another big complaint. This unit has the worst, most confusing. instruction manual I have ever seen. It took an engineer to figure it out and there was no "Quick Start" guide packaged with it. We returned this unit.
It got reasonable reviews and seemed like a good idea at the time, but . . . .
